Poultry farming

Better training for safe food

September 27-30, 2021

Around 2000 BC, people in India began to domesticate red fowl native to Southeast Asia, which, taxonomically speaking, would belong to the Phasianidae family.

Since then, much has changed in the livestock branch we call "poultry farming." Although most work has been done on the species Gallus gallus (chicken in our language), other species have not been neglected in the adaptation process, including turkeys, ducks, geese, partridges, and pheasants.

In support of the need for more efficient production management and with the interest of enabling profit but also protecting the health of the end consumer, the EU BTSF Academy organized a four-day training, an online platform, where it was possible to present and emphasize existing production, legislative and public health patterns of behavior and the possibilities of adopting best EU practices.

The training covered three thematic areas with all relevant areas of science-based management in the form of a theoretical and “practical” approach. What significantly burdens modern poultry production today are the zoonotic potentials that this production very often carries with it, and they relate to problems in the control of salmonella, campylobacter and antimicrobial resistance, AMR. Visible arguments can be found in the table:

Very well-organized work in virtual interaction conditions facilitated four days of sitting in front of a computer for 5 hours and 20 minutes of practical work and 11 hours and 30 minutes of improving theoretical knowledge as stated in the BTSF Certificate of Participation, a Better Training for Safe Food initiative, which has been completed by more than 41,000 participants in various thematic trainings to date.
The work program can be found here

What should continue, according to the organizers' recommendation, is the process of knowledge dissemination, the exchange of adopted information, part of which is this information that is being made available. For more than this summarized information, we are at your disposal for any expressed interest in the topic. We thank the participants for their opportunities to participate in the training and for any interest related to the above.

Poultry farming is one of the most developed branches of livestock farming in the Republika Srpska, but also in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition to the advisory service regularly provided by our expert team, the laboratories of the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Pathology have accredited procedures for the diagnosis of: infectious bronchitis, avian influenza and Gamboro disease. Special attention was paid to the detection of the genus Salmonella spp.
