Academic Professor Dr Vaso Butozan is one of the most prominent figures in the history of Yugoslav veterinary medicine.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Vaso Butozan was born on 5 December 1902 in Star\u010devo, near Pan\u010devo, into a family of agricultural labourers. He completed his primary and secondary education in Pan\u010devo, and then enrolled at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, where he graduated. During his studies in Belgrade, he became a member of the Independent Workers' Party of Yugoslavia.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After that, in 1926, he enrolled at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb, where he graduated in 1930. Immediately after graduating, he was appointed assistant at the Institute of Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb.

In early 1933, he transferred to the Institute for Infectious Diseases, but in 1934 he decided to move to the Hygiene Institute in Banja Luka, where he headed the Department of Veterinary Epidemiology.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Dr Vasa Butozan's prolific work comprises around 100 scientific and professional papers published in well-known foreign and domestic journals of the SFR Yugoslavia, particularly in the Veterinarski glasnik (Belgrade) and the Veterinarski arhiv (Zagreb). He paid special attention to livestock production and veterinary services. Dr Vasa Butozan's significant contribution lies in his work and the founding of the University of Sarajevo, and he was one of the founders of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Agriculture. He was the first Rector of the University of Sarajevo and held this position for three terms. At the Faculty of Agriculture, he was elected a full professor of Veterinary Medicine in 1949, and at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, he was elected a full professor of Infectious Diseases in 1950. He was elected Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo for two terms.<\/p>

Dr Vaso Butozan is known to have risen socially and politically, becoming a public servant of great quality. In the first government of the People's Republic of BiH in 1945, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Livestock, and in 1947, Minister of Science and Culture. From this position, he was elected President of the Union of Veterinary Medical and Veterinary Technicians' Societies of BiH. He served as the life president of the Society of Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians of SFRJ, BiH, etc.<\/p>

Dr Vaso Butozan was a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a full member of the New York Academy of Sciences, and a full member of the Yugoslav Academy of the Scientific Society for the History of Health Culture. He was elected a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, a corresponding member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a corresponding member of the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He was awarded honorary doctorates by Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Sarajevo. He was the editor of several journals (Veterinaria Sarajevo, Acta hystorica medicinae, pharmaciae et veterinae Belgrade), the editorial board of the Encyclopaedia of Yugoslavia for BiH, and a member of the editorial board of \u201cVeterinary Glasnik\u201d, 'Enciklopedia moderna' and \u201cAgricultural Encyclopaedia\u201d. He served as president of the National Committee of the World Veterinary Association, was a member of the permanent commission of the World Veterinary Association, permanent representative to the Office international des \u00e9pizooties in Paris and Director of the Scientific and Research Institute of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo from 1960 to 1967. For his professional, scientific and societal work, he received many honours and awards.<\/p>

He retired on 1 May 1966, so in 1967 he moved to Zagreb, where he spent the last days of his life.
