Pig farming

Certainly the most important task of the Veterinary Institute in the past was the fight against classical swine fever in the territory of the Republic of Srpska. The laboratories of the Veterinary Institute have accredited iELISA for the detection of antibodies and antigens of the viral particle.

Classical swine fever (CSF) is a very important viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, known for about 170 years. Organized control of classical swine fever began in the 19th century. Today, most countries have prescribed measures to suppress and ultimately eradicate CSF virus (CSFV) in both domestic and wild pigs. The success of such measures depends primarily on economic conditions, awareness of pig farmers about the risk factors for the occurrence and spread of CSF, infrastructure, organization of the veterinary service, and diagnostic capacities and professional staff. CSF is one of the animal diseases whose control has a high priority in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For this reason, the Veterinary Service of Bosnia and Herzegovina has launched a CSF Study within the framework of IDA Project Loan No. 435-BOS.

The two main objectives to be achieved during the project activities were: (i) increasing the capacity of the Veterinary Service of BiH to make decisions on changes in CSF control policy based on adequate information; and (ii) improving the legislative control of CSF, as well as diagnostic capacities in order to ensure a timely and effective response in the event of CSF outbreaks.

It should not be forgotten to mention that the Institute's professional staff works daily on the diagnosis and control of other infectious diseases of pigs in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Our expert team is at the disposal of all interested parties who wish to engage in this branch of livestock farming.
