During regular activities on diagnostics and control of bovine mastitis, the Veterinary Institute of the Republic of Srpska "Dr Vaso Butozan" (VIRSVB) faces various challenges. One of them is the identification of isolated microorganisms. In this regard, it is important to note that two extremely rare causative agents of bovine mastitis have been isolated in VIRSVB.
On two farms in Semberija in 2022 and 2023, the bacterial species Nocardia cyriacigeorgica was isolated. It is a human pathogen that, until its isolation in VIRSB, had only been isolated in China and Brazil as the causative agent of bovine mastitis. The isolate was typed based on several genes, the sequences of which were submitted to the gene database (NCBI), and the isolate was characterized as the “Butozan strain”.

A very rare fungus from the genus Scedosporium was isolated in early 2024 on a cattle farm in Lopare. The role of this fungus in the pathogenesis of bovine mastitis is unknown, so the isolation of this pathogen represents an extremely rare and pioneering finding in the literature. Further analyses of this pathogen are ongoing. Additional microbiological and molecular investigations are being conducted in cooperation with experts from the Scientific Institute of Veterinary Medicine "Novi Sad" in Novi Sad and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade.
