General information

The Veterinary Institute of Republika Srpska (VIRSVB), a public institution whose founder is the Government of Republika Srpska, is an independent, legally responsible entity that operates from two locations, in Banja Luka and Bijeljina.

VIRSVB is a scientific, professional, research and specialist institution in the field of veterinary medicine, whose primary activity is laboratory testing in the area of animal health protection and food safety. Other activities carried out at VIRSVB include scientific research, publishing (books, journals, etc.), epizootiological surveillance, issuing expert opinions, vaccination control, allergological testing, and control of zoonoses, participation in the development and adoption of measures, plans and programmes for the diagnosis and control of infectious and parasitic animal diseases, as well as in the field of food safety; distribution of vaccines and identification tags for marking animals; organisation and implementation of educational events, etc.
VIRSVB organises lectures and training courses in the field of animal health protection and food safety independently, at the request of service users, competent authorities or organisations, and awards certificates of attendance.

Since 2011, JV IRSSB has been accredited in accordance with the BAS EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy of Republika Srpska has authorised the VIRSVB to carry out diagnostic tests for animal health, including pathanatomical, pathological-histological, bacteriological, parasitological, mycological, virological, serological, molecular, biochemical, hormonal and other diagnostic tests, diagnosis of pregnancy, control of immunity, determination of vaccination programmes, tuberculinisation, epizootiological surveys, production of autogenous vaccines, determination of the efficacy of disinfectants, morphological determination of mosquito species and genera, morphological determination of vectors, and for carrying out basic and specialised analyses of food and animal feed (organoleptic, physico-chemical, microbiological, parasitological, detection of prohibited substances, veterinary drugs, contaminants and metabolites, serotyping, determination of meat species), microbiological examinations of water, samples from the working and production environment (surface swabs) and samples from the primary production phase, radiological examinations of food, animal feed, water and environmental samples, sampling of food, animal feed, swabs, raw milk, blood, interpretation of test results and the provision of expert opinions and interpretations.

VIRSVB is also authorised to test the quality of fresh raw milk. VIRSVB has been appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy of Republika Srpska as the reference laboratory for the diagnostic testing of infectious diseases of significance to Republika Srpska, namely: tuberculosis, Johne's disease, contagious claudication of sheep, African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, salmonellosis, American foulbrood, bee nosema, Aethina tumida, Trichinella spp., brucellosis, enzootic bovine leucosis, Q fever, avian influenza, classical swine plague, Gumboro disease, infectious bronchitis, bluetongue disease, infectious anaemia of equines, paratuberculosis of ruminants, rabies, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, porcine parvovirus infection and bovine viral diarrhoea.

By the Decision on the designation of authorised laboratories in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Official Gazette of BiH 68/05 and 90/05), VIRSVB is authorised as the reference laboratory of BiH for the diagnosis of the following infectious diseases: Q fever, rabies, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, enzootic bovine leucosis, equine infectious anaemia, classical swine plague and goat viral arthritis and encephalitis.
